Mexico remains a cash-first market. Roughly 80% of local businesses operate primarily in cash, and nearly 40% of adults sit outside the formal financial system. Closing this gap is Clip’s core mission. As the leading digital commerce platform in Mexico, Clip is building the “operating system of Mexican commerce” by unifying software, payments, and financial services.

Lucas Parente, Group Product Manager, leads three critical product verticals at Clip: in-person payments, remote payments, and integrations. With a background in civil engineering and extensive experience scaling data operations and payment integrations across Latin America at Rappi, Lucas views product challenges through an infrastructure lens—focusing on solving problems properly rather than just launching features.

The Challenge: Strong Transactional Data, But a Blind Spot on User Behavior

While Clip has always been a data-driven organization, it historically faced a significant visibility gap. The team possessed robust transactional metrics (such as transaction volume and Total Processed Volume) but lacked insight into user behavior before a transaction occurred.

“We had plenty of hard business data, but what happened before a transaction was created, where users came from, where they got stuck… we didn’t have that kind of visibility.” — Lucas Parente, Group Product Manager, Clip

This missing layer of behavioral context became impossible to ignore, prompting the organization-wide rollout of Mixpanel.

Why Mixpanel

Clip’s legacy analytics software couldn’t keep pace with the evolving demands of its teams. Rather than adopting another standalone tool, Clip needed a unified platform that could serve Product, Business, and Engineering simultaneously—eliminating data silos across the organization.

Three strict criteria drove their final decision:

  • Visualization Flexibility: Alternative tools were too rigid to build the complex behavioral analyses the team required.
  • Event and Property Granularity: The capacity to drill down to the individual property level within a funnel was decisive.
  • Data Security: As a fintech organization, Clip required strict guarantees that sensitive data would remain secure and fully protected– Mixpanel met this high bar.
The tools we used to use were very limiting, especially when you wanted to do property-level analysis within a funnel. Ever since we switched to Mixpanel, however, it’s been incredible.

Implementation: From Zero to Mapped Funnels in Under a Week

To accelerate adoption, Clip partnered with Mixpanel implementation partner Bildung Data to run hands-on workshops. Each product team selected a live workflow as a proof of concept. The Bildung team downloaded the Clip app, created a merchant account, and simulated each workflow end-to-end alongside Clip’s engineers.

“From implementing events to visualizing them, we had funnels fully mapped in under a week.”— Lucas Parente

This rapid time-to-value caused adoption to spread organically beyond Product into Business and Engineering teams.

The Catalyst: Launching Tap to Pay

Tap to Pay didn’t start in a strategy deck—it began with a critical observation: Clip’s smallest merchants, who needed digital payments the most, faced the steepest barriers to adoption. The upfront cost, learning curve, and logistics of buying physical card readers created heavy friction, locking out Mexico’s most vulnerable micro-businesses.

At the same time, Apple and Google opened their NFC APIs, making it possible to turn a smartphone into a point-of-sale device. Clip’s product team connected the dots: Why force merchants to buy extra hardware when the phone already in their pocket could run their business?

Overcoming Three Layers of Complexity with a Tap

While the frontend experience of Tap to Pay is deceptively simple (just hold a card near a phone), the product team had to solve three complex challenges simultaneously:

  • Technical: NFC behavior varies drastically by phone brand, hardware model, and OS version. The software had to be optimized across hundreds of device configurations.
  • Trust & UX: The interface had to be intuitive enough for a merchant who had never accepted a digital payment before to succeed on their very first try.
  • Regulatory: Clip launched Tap to Pay as an official Apple partner, timed to coincide with the World Cup. Meeting this fixed deadline meant clearing complex payment compliance requirements in parallel with product development.
Today Mixpanel is the starting point for any product discussion. Before deciding what we're going to prioritize, flow we redesign or feature we launch, we always use Mixpanel to decide.

Mixpanel in Action: Clip’s Engine for Product Decisions

1. Shifting from Reactive Support to Proactive Investigation

Previously, resolving a merchant complaint required manual cross-referencing of support tickets, backend activity logs, and database tables. Today, Clip handles troubleshooting through two distinct motions:

  • Proactive Alerts: Utilizing Root Cause Analysis, Mixpanel automatically flags anomalies and fires alerts directly to Slack and email when a metric deviates from its expected pattern.
  • Reactive Diagnostics: When a merchant reports an issue, the team can reconstruct their activity timeline second-by-second in Mixpanel, isolating bugs with extreme precision.

2. Live, Dynamic Executive Reporting

Executive meetings used to rely on static slide decks, meaning unexpected questions often had to be tabled until the following week.

“If someone asks a question outside of what we prepared, we jump into Mixpanel and pull the data right there. That changed things a lot: discussions are much more dynamic now.”— Lucas Parente

The Tap to Pay Launch: Instrumented from Day Zero

The Tap to Pay rollout perfectly illustrates Mixpanel’s impact at Clip. Long before writing a single line of code, the team studied existing user behaviors and benchmarked global market alternatives to map out the ideal UX.

Prior to launch, the team fully instrumented the funnel—tracking every step from app installation to the first successful transaction. This data was segmented by app version, operating system, geographic region, device model, and user type (new vs. existing), and measured independently across iOS and Android.

Spotting the “Hidden” Friction

Mixpanel caught behavioral nuances that traditional funnels miss. While two merchants might both successfully complete a step, one might take thirty seconds while another takes five minutes. Mixpanel allowed Clip to surface these velocity gaps and trace them back to specific user cohorts.

This granularity proved vital within the first 48 hours of launch when a drop in conversion occurred across specific Android models.

“That hit our conversion pretty hard. But even before complaints started coming in, we saw there were errors and were able to react very quickly. We iterated, iterated, iterated until we reached the conversion we expected. It was a huge win: literally from day one we could see exactly where people were getting stuck and what was happening.” — Lucas Parente

By diagnosing the drop instantly, the engineering team shipped a fix in under 48 hours, before a single customer complaint was filed.

Lucas is candid about the alternative, because without that visibility, Clip had two likely paths.

  • Option A: Support Escalation ─> 2-3 weeks to reach Product ─> Hundreds of merchants affected
  • Option B: App Store Reviews ─> Public complaints & low ratings ─> Public brand damage & churn

Measuring Long-Term Value: Activation, Frequency, and Retention

For Clip, product success isn’t defined by a single download metric. The health of Tap to Pay is evaluated across three core dimensions:

  1. Activation: The percentage of merchants who successfully complete their first real digital transaction.
  2. Frequency: How consistently merchants transact (daily, weekly, monthly) to separate long-term users from one-time trialists.
  3. Retention: The share of active merchants from month one who remain active at the 30, 60, and 90-day marks.

Catching Silent Churn

By breaking down funnels by merchant characteristics, Clip identifies patterns that cause users to abandon the platform. For example, they noticed a cohort of merchants who opened the Tap to Pay screen repeatedly but never completed a transaction—yet generated no backend error logs. Mixpanel helped the team discover that these users were experiencing “silent failures,” like app freezes or background restarts. Spotting this early allowed the team to optimize the UI and save those accounts from churning.

Measurable Business Impact

Since the launch of Tap to Pay, Clip has seen its user growth accelerate among a highly strategic segment: merchants with no prior digital transaction history. By removing the friction of physical hardware costs, cash-only businesses are entering the digital economy for the very first time.

“Removing the barrier to accepting payments means more merchants get access to the digital system.” — Lucas Parente

Validating AI Innovation

Clip is actively testing ways to integrate automated analytics into their daily operations. Lucas uses a rigorous method to validate Mixpanel’s built-in Root Cause Analysis tool: he conducts manual diagnostics first, then compares his findings against the AI’s conclusions.

“From the tests I’ve run over the past few weeks, it’s worked pretty well. Mixpanel reached the same conclusions I did, just much faster.”— Lucas Parente

Previously, monitoring required Lucas to manually check conversions and event volumes every morning—a process that created a single point of failure if he was out of the office. Now, automated anomaly alerts route directly to collective Slack channels, ensuring the entire team can respond instantly to unexpected metric shifts. One recent automated alert traced an event spike directly to a specific app release, saving the team hours of diagnostic guesswork.

What's Next for Clip

Moving forward, Clip is establishing a company-wide standard where every single product launch is fully instrumented from day zero. Their roadmap includes:

  • Expanding Mixpanel access to additional cross-functional business units.
  • Scaling automated Root Cause Analysis across all core transactional flows.
  • Deepening their use of predictive product analytics tools to transition from proactive diagnostics to predictive optimizations.
The direction is clear: we want to offer businesses more simplicity, with more intelligence behind it. Every interaction a business has with Clip generates data, and that data lets us offer more capable solutions. We expect contactless payments, Tap to Pay, to become the standard in Mexico, so any business can accept digital payments.

Lucas's Advice for Other Product Teams

  1. Instrument before you launch, then iterate: Don’t wait for a flawless tracking setup. Identify the three or four foundational questions you absolutely need answered, build events for them, and expand your tracking surface area once you are live.
  2. Invest in data governance early: Undocumented events rapidly become a major bottleneck. When context stays trapped in the heads of individual builders, scaling becomes impossible. Document your schema as you go so anyone in the company can self-serve answers.
  3. Don’t confuse having data with having a data culture: The critical differentiator is discipline. A true data culture isn’t about how much data you collect; it’s about the operational discipline to consistently look at what the data is telling you and actively modify your product roadmap based on those insights.
Mixpanel makes it easy for teams to explore and understand their data. No delays. No SQL.
